It has 18 layers of coating which makes them very durable.

Making LacquerwaresThe traditional lacquer process practiced in Vietnam is quite complicated and can take up to 3 months to finish one piece. The stages are as follows:1. The shape , made from MDF board, fibre glass, bamboo or raw timber, is examined and any crack is sealed2. Mother of pearls is cut into designed shape pieces. Then these pieces are inlaid into the product by compressing with glue3. The piece is covered with a thick coating which is a mixture of nature lacquer, finely ground mountain rock, sawdust and alluvial soil4. When this coating has dried, the product is place under fresh water and sanded5. Using a brush made from natural fibre, a mixture of alluvial soil and natural lacquer is painted onto the product6. Step 4 and 5 are repeated7. The product is coved with pure natural lacquer8. Lacquer is beaten for 24 hours to form a glutinous mixture. This mixture is then applied to the piece as a thick coating9. Once again, the product is sanded under water10. Step 8 and 9 are repeated several times11. The base design is stenciled in. The details are painted by hand and mother of pearl are carved by hand which every lacquer product an original piece. No two pieces are exactly alike 12. The bare surface area is painted with traditional lacquer and the areas with design are painted with clear lacquer13. Step 12 is repeated several times14. The product is polished15. Hinges and locks are fitted16. The piece is carefully inspected and packed
